Broccoli Scandal in Washington: What's in Your Fridge?

Meh, artichokes are OK, but not really worth the faffing around. I've been known to eat a pound of asparagus by myself, though.

The artichoke skit from "The Little Rascals" was certainly amusing.
I'll remember that next time I'm served one.
Broccoli was invented as a hybrid of kohlrabi and cauliflower, doesn't exist in nature.
This year I'm working with brussels sprouts and kohlrabi in the garden, though if I can lay hands on a life specimen or seed stocks for Mojave squaw cabbage, an asparagus like wild species in the same family, I'll concentrate on that.

As we are all supposed to weathering these times of austerity together then they should be eating gruel I reckon
asparagus gets my vote for being the poshest veg. Purple sprouting might come a second, it is hideously expensive to buy but good to grow your own

One thing that makes it relatively expensive is that it takes two years to mature. that makes it a pretty risky crop--gambling on the weather for two years as well as other factors.

Yep. I think they are pretty labour-intensive too.

With my kohlrabi, I'm getting half a dozen market size plants per sixteen liter bucket first season, but can't expect them to flower and seed till the second year.
The brussels sprouts are beginning to put out secondary buds, but probably won't mature till autumn.

I've started them from cuttings before, from which all I got was a modest 1st season seed crop.
This is the first time from seed with a prospect of table worthy vegetables.
