I'd never heard of them before. Looks like a magnifying glass with tweaks.

The one used on me had a polarised light source (I'd heard somewhere that it would be a laser scan). The specialist said it was cross polarised, which raised my eyebrow, but she couldn't say any more. Sort of pale mauve/lilac colour light.
