SEx: Unfrost frosted glass

What sorcery is this? Put some clear tape on frosted glass to see clearly through it.

How does that work then?

I'm guessing somewhat here, but I think it would only work if the frosting is a rough surface & the tape is put on that side. The tape would then provide a sufficiently smooth surface for some light to pass straight through instead of being deflected by the frosting.

Vaseline works pretty well for this. It has a similar refractive index to glass, so as it fills the grooves the light is no longer deflected.

(If you have a glass bottle with a frosted glass neck and a frosted glass stopper, and you put a dab of vaseline on the stopper so it doesn't stick, you'll notice this.)
