SEx: Sneezing

If I have a tickle in my nose caused by dust then I will probably sneeze. However, the air is exhaled from my mouth. Surely this doesn't help to dislodge the dust? Is this an evolutionary blip?

The air comes out both. Most of it comes out of your mouth because the passageway is broader and to send two lungfuls of air through the nasal passages at that speed would probably explode your face.

Sometimes when I sneeze I'll hold my nose and close my mouth. This probably isn't a good idea because sometimes the air comes out of my tear ducts and ears instead of the more normal routes. I still have my fact though so I guess that's a plus.

I used to know a nutter whose party piece was to take a puff of a cigarette, close his mouth, hold his nose, and blow as hard as he could to make the smoke come out of his eyes. He said he couldn't see for about 10 minutes after doing it.

For some reason he still considered it worthwhile.

I didn't know that the 'air' comes out of the nose too when you sneeze. I've sneezed when holding my nose and tried to sneeze with my mouth shut. I've also experimented with forcing both my nose and mouth shut when I sneeze. The latter is useful in situations when you just can't sneeze. Although these situations are often ones where a sneeze will have the comic effect of making those around you jump out of their skin.

I wonder how foreigners represent the sound of a sneeze? The English is obviously "achooo!"

I've heard that if you force your eyes to stay open during a sneeze they can pop out of their sockets. smiley - bigeyes

Here's something I've always wondered ... do we ever sneeze while we're asleep?

I've never seen anyone doing it. Would the sneeze stimulus wake a person up before sneezing? Next time you see someone sleeping on a bus or train, sprinkle a bit of pepper on their top lip and see.

You may want to see A1099721. You could add 'apsou' in Greek, the answer being 'yeetses'.

smiley - yikes (that's the closest I could find to a sneeze smiley)
