Well, finally the gallery is open - and it looks fantastic. smiley - smiley

Monday was a total success and everyone was very impressed by the whole thing. I am beginning to wind down a bit now - although it is the crucial time when we see whether people actually like it or not.

But at least it is open and running with only minor teething trouble.

Hopefully, this means I shall be able to squander more of my time here (again). Just the college work to catch up on now smiley - smiley

yeah, I have almost recovered from that totally bonkers month I've just had. It got pretty awful at a couple of points - really hard work, totally exhausted etc. but it was SO worth it. And thoroughly glad it is over. Hurrah again smiley - smiley

This weekend is going to be challenging though. The first weekend proper when the Boat Gallery has been open - and we've had a lot of great press from the local papers and regional TV news. So I think we are going to be super-busy this weekend.

It will be very interesting to see how people react to the gallery. The Bronze Age is a very difficult period to interpret - not a great deal is known about it, and it sort of falls (in terms of general perception) somewhere between the Flintstones and the Vikings. We are working within a quite "specialist interest" area (come on - what do _you_ know about BA Britain? - it's tough, and not on national curriculum - the buggers). It will be very interesting to see how people work with the information we've used. So far this week, our visitors seem to have been particularly interested in the boat and have come specially to see it - and they have really enjoyed the gallery. And it is going to be busy this weekend - yikes! (but bloddy fantastic at the same time smiley - smiley )

Bronze Age? What would you like to know? smiley - smiley

I spent most of my time back then saving up my stones in the hopes that one day I'd have enough to build a house with them. I had a few gold pieces and a couple of ostrich eggs, so I was pretty well off. I spent my summers harvesting flax and tanning hides, and my winters were spent in the gypsum mines. The pay sucked but it kept me off the streets.

I can just imagine you in your little woven tunic working the fields. They were ingenious folk then - I mean, the Dover boat is a pretty clever piece of design. But the clothes sucked.

Back then, we didn't have the snap-together, modular world of today. Craftsmanship was everything, but most of us were too preoccupied to really appreciate it. Thanks to the technology of today, we have more time to appreciate good craftsmanship - the trick these days is finding it. They really don't make 'em like they used to. smiley - smiley

Hey, I liked my little woven tunic. I had two of them, you know. I told you I was pretty well off. smiley - smiley
