Royal Mail: write to your MP

Do you want to have a British postal system that is based on service rather than profit?

Would you like to keep the Royal Mail?

If so, write to your MP.

I rarely write to my MP (but I did shake his hand at a demo during the summer: he's one of the good ones) but I emailed him a short while ago asking him to table an early day motion asking for a public consultation about the future of Royal Mail & The Post Office.

I feel that the majority of the public want Royal Mail to continue as a public body but our government is ignoring that feeling.

Waste of time mate. Govt is simply bending to the wishes of the EU. The post comes under "Services of General Economic Interest" and the EU has stipulated that these must be opened up to competition. http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/economic-reports/index_en.htm#services

You may not have noticed, but postmen are striking all over Europe - http://www.france24.com/en/20090922-paris-postal-workers-strike-privatisation-fears-france-mail-la-poste

When the Govt proposed cutting Post Offices, Labour MPs assured their constituents that they would oppose such moves. Some of the self-same MPs then bowed to the party whip and voted in favour of the closures or abstained.

You can write to your MP, but whatever he/she says means nothng if he/she takes orders from someone else. You might want to write to the PM - but he too can't go against the EU. You could write to your MEP, but he/she has no power to influence directives already passed and he/she cannot propose legislation.

You could write to your EU Commissioner, but he/she isn't elected and doesn't need to pay attention to voters.

Thank you for the link Roymondo.

I went there there and suddenly realised that I really did not know much about the reasons for the strike, with all the participants, actually saying one thing and doing another,

I must fly and have mu bath before my carer decides to go home.!!

go well.

I shall continue reading this thread with great interest to see if we can find the real reason for the strike.!!

Best wishes,

fords - number 1 all over heaven

I wrote to my MP, even though the mad bint was responsible for shutting down half the region's Post Offices against the wishes of pretty much everyone else. However, at least I can say I did write to her!

Ironically, we can't actually write a letter of complaint. Who's going to deliver it?

Maybe try emailing them? Although i read that around two thirds of M.P's don't even check their email, let alone reply, for around 3 weeks.smiley - rolleyes

Might be more effective to send "disgusted of Newton Abbot' type letters en masse by email to every newspaper, stating "by the way, we write for a BBC website"smiley - evilgrin....which is true & i found it got me backstage to snog Placebo!smiley - drool

I got a reply to my email: they'll look in to it. I doubt much will come of it but every little (possibly) helps. SWL is, alas, correct.

Who sent a letter today, i liked their last phrase:

"In five years time, will you say 'I allowed this to happen' or will you do something about it?"

And i've given a link to this thread.
