We all get a day off, and what do we do? Go shopping, what about the poor people who work in the shops? I say bring back bank holidays the way they used to be and have all the shops shut for a change, and while we're at it why not let shop workers have Sundays off like they used to? In fact whatever happened to early closing day as a compensation for working on Saturdays?

Unfortunatly I work in a hospital, we don't get bank holidays, even an amendment to close shops et al someone still has to work, I do get double time for it tho

Leiu must be a really popular place, as everybody I know gets a day off there - Which brings me to my question :
If most people get a day off in Leiu, where do the locals in Leiu go on their bank holidays?

What comes first? I before U or U before I.

It's lieu, it's the French word for place. i.e. in place of...
I know some people have to work on bank holidays and they often get well paid for it - I once worked a half day on New Year's Day, it was my normal shift anyway so I was getting paid for a whole day anyway, I got double time in addition for the six hours that I worked as well as a whole day holiday in lieu.
But my point is shop workers aren't really required on a bank holiday, the only reason shops open on these days is BECAUSE shops open on these days and therefore if you don't you'll lose out on trade. If nobody opened their shops, nobody would lose out on trade because everyone would do their shopping the next day that the shops were open!

I work in a shop on Saturdays and when it's a bank holiday, they try to get us in to cover - we do get double time though.

Not just shops & hospitals (& emergency services) but the entertainment industry. All those special bank holiday events as well as cinemas etc. have workers.
I think it would be good to have a holiday when as much as possible is closed. Like Christmas but without all the indulgence & stress!
