A Conversation for Talking Point: Bank Holidays

Balance

People do seem to worry that any event that we choose to commemorate may (and probably will) cause offence to some group. The solution: create a little balance.

For example, why not have a national holiday to celebrate the battle of Bannockburn? While this would probably be extremely popular in Scotland, there may be less enthusiasm south of the border. The solution would be to celebrate Bannockburn (23rd June) AND to celebrate the battle of Culloden (16th April).

OK so far so good. Here are a list of possible battles that we could commemorate with a public holiday. All we need is a complimentary list of battles to create the relevant balance.

Culloden (16th April) - Balance for the English
VE Day (8th May) - Liberation for Europe
Waterloo (18th June) - Europe united against Napoleon
Bannockburn (23rd June) - One for the Scots
Salamanca (22nd July) - How about a Spanish holiday?
Battle of the Nile (1st August) - Cross the T's
VJ Day (15th August) - The end of the last World War. Got to be worth a wee dram!
Crecy (26th August) - Nice weather to raise 2 fingers to the world.
Poitiers (18th September) - the one most people can't remember
Trafalgar (21st October) - Raise a glass for "Poor Horace"
Agincourt (25th October) - Weather not so nice, but great speach in Henry V

Anybody want to suggest any more?

Now we need some balance.
Maybe the Battle of Hastings (14th October) could act as balance for Crecy?
Any more suggestions?
