This site, http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/606/default.stm ,is it be closed.
It is already a DNA driven site and as a nontechy it would seem that it and it's community could work together.
Football could become a 'wing' of h2g2.
There is big money in Football, Lord Alan Sugar for instance, perhaps Rooney would buy it.

Have you visited 606? More to the point have you visited Not 606, the forum that has been set up to replace it?
Trust me, those are not the sort of people I'd want to see on h2g2.

I've never ventured to 606, but I just can't imagine that there would be much cultural overlap between our groups.
"Hey, Vogons, here's a group of scintillating jeweled scuttling crabs I'd like you to meet. You folks are from the same planet, I'm sure you'll get along like gang-busters."

Sounds about right.

Point taken. The 606 community is not for us but the notion is.
As a group within h2g2 I reckon that we could handle the hooligans.

I don't see how the notion of a separate football section fits with h2g2...

Ancient Brit Posted Jan 26, 2011
OK Magwitch - We already have it.
Activities of h2g2 Groups need to be highlighted when things settle down.
The need to lurk more closely becomes evident. Long live the post.
H2g2 embraces Life, the Universe and Everything or so is the claim.
Whilst writing can be seen as the life blood of h2g2, it needs a heart to circulate it and a body to circulate in.
It's a shame but texting and modern technology may well put writing out of fashion.
The ability to tell it as you see it may come to the fore.

I don't see how writing... no *reading* will ever come out of fashion and I actually put some thinking into it only a week ago.
You think h2g2 can only have heart and body by merging with some football stuff?
Football on h2g2
Tavaron da Quirm - Arts Editor Posted Jan 26, 2011
Yeah... I don't see what football has to do with any of these.

I think 606 is just a forum. They talk to each other. They'll do fine with phpBB or any other type of free forum software. Easy.
h2g2 has a lot more stuff. We have entries, review fora, journals, personal spaces. It's a lot more complicated.
I would like to bring the full DNA system, with its ability to run several communities, with us. If we did, we could easily set up something like 606.h2g2.com as a "related" community which would share a login system and an underlying technology but not much else. The few who were members of both would see conversations from both in their message centre, and that would be the only real relationship between the two. (In fact, we could bring over all the /dna/ boards that way, including the closed ones, and reopen them. If we could find people willing to take care of them.)
That sort of thing wouldn't harm us (except in increasing server load, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on whether we carry adverts), but I can't see the 606ers being very interested. They'll do grand on a more normal system they can get anywhere for free. The only real reason they'd want to come with us is if they're interested in carrying over their legacy content. It would be tricky to import their legacy content into a different system, such as phpBB.
We don't yet have any real idea whether we'll get the DNA technology or have to build our own, so this conversation is entirely hypothetical. We may have difficulty importing legacy content ourselves.

Baron Grim Posted Jan 26, 2011
Yea, the legacy content is a worrying thing.
I was thinking about that earlier. In the very dreadful event that we can't bring along all the entries written by es, we need to make a concerted effort to get as many researchers as we can to either give specific assent to transferring their articles or to transfer them over personally. At least we'd have several hundred articles to populate the guide with upon reopening.
I'm confident it won't come to that, but it is a contingency we may have to deal with.
Oh... sorry, topic drift...

I think football has a place (well everything has a place - it is a guide to everything )... but that place is the VSC (as already mention). The football fans we have here, I would venture, are quite different to most of the football fans on 606

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Jan 26, 2011
It's not just losing the entries that concerns me. Many of us have ongoing and continually updated journal conversations going back several years which would be a crying shame to lose.
