I was just reading your description of the Sonoran desert etc. , and sighing romantically to myself (until I got to the bit about the bikes!). I went to Arizona for my honeymoon, it was also my first visit to the USA, and was seriously something else. So much space, I was brought up in the countryside myself, but I've never lived anywhere where it is possible to drive for maybe a hundred miles and see about three other cars on the road, and no houses at all. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen, though being accustomed to an all green countryside, it felt almost surreal in ways.

It's a lovely desert. Thanks for the coment What brought you to Arizona for a honeymoon? Were you camping? Escaping the snow? Or is there yet another draw that I'm not aware of?

It just seemed like somewhere different to go, - from Ireland to Arizon is a bit of a change! Also a good friend of mine was engaged to a guy from Arizona, and he'd told us loads about it. plus we got to see the grand canyon - wow!! 'Fraid we were'nt camping though, it was november at the time, and a bit chilly ( in the north) for ye olde camping game.

Yes, it can get cold in norther AZ during the fall and winter. The Grand Canyon is a sight that everyone should see at least once -- my mother refers to it as "The Big Ditch". It's hard for me to make myself realize just how big it is... and I've seen it at least three times. I remember on my first trip my thought was that it looked unreal, sort of hazy, like it was a painting or something...
