Is there a way to put an image at the top of the introduction on my user page?

Jamie.

Yes there is. Look at the guideml clinic at http://www.h2g2.com/Guideml-clinic and look at the Picture tag. Thats the way of putting pictures in Guideml.
But, at the moment, h2g2 can't host your images. So, if you see a picture on h2g2 that you like, thats fine (as long as its not another users, they may not want you to nick it smiley - winkeye but if you want your own picture, you need to have it somewhere which supports offsite requests.
Free places that do this are http://www.geocities.com/ and http://www.deja.com/

Hope this helps...smiley - smiley

I've just signed up for a free web page at a couple of different sites (including the yahoo/geocities one) and both have in their site requirements "No storing files for the purpose of linking to them from
outside of the network"

Any advice?

ignore it? I don't like to advocate that but most people do...

incoperate them on pages on your free space?

This situation shouldn't last much longer.

Ah...I'm really new at this and I apologize for being basically stupid...but you can add pages to your site as well as the given main page?

Assuming you're talking about geocities - sure you can. The main one has to be called index.htm or index.html, but you can have as many others as you like...

Geocities have some utilities for creating webpages, - PageBuilder and PageWizards all of these are (I think) available from the geocities.com front page. You can also write html pages offline using notepad or Frontpage or whatever, and upload them...

A good guide to writing HTML from scratch can be found here: http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/Guide/

Okay so far...thanks for the leads Joanna. You're more than an ACE. Bit by bit, by trial and error, I'll get it. If I spent less time chatting I'd probably learn a lot for sure!

Again thanks for this new direction.
