According to the Wright Stuff, that repratle sorce of information, today is world marmalade day, so in conjunction with the anniversary of 509 years of marmadale, why do they call it marmalade and not orange jam?

Hello GAZ.
Ok. It first appeared in english print in 1524.
It was originally made using Quinces, whose name, in Portuguese, is Marmelo, which may have been corrupted to Marmelada.
Come the 18th Century, Seville Oranges were used instead.
The major difference, as I see it, between Marmalade and Jam is that the former is made from Citrus Fruit, while jam is made from soft fruit, and Marmalade always has pith and zest in it of varying degrees of coarseness, while jam rarely has full fruit (unless home-made).

Hope this helps....
