Why is it that when I receive letters through the post, they have always got the same 5-digit number printed somewhere near to the address. Is it some kind of shorthand for the address similar to a post-code?

<>? Should be different for every street if it's the post-code and I know only of six digit ones.

It's not the postcode. The number on my addresses is 50931. It is on lots of my mail and is always the same number. It is different for different streets. But what is it for??

They're Mailsort codes. Basically codes that address not exactly where the recipient lives, but where their mail is sorted. Bulk mailers get a discount if they present mail in Mailsort order.
