It stands for quasi-stellar object, which basically means "something star-like". It is a very bright object, and usually very distant. Nobody quite knows what they are. Some believe they could be the hypothetical "white holes". A kind of exit for all the stuff that falls into black holes. They might also be black holes themelves. When matter falls into a black hole, it might get very heated and bright due to it being compressed along with other matter. And if it is outside of the event horizon, that light can escape the black hole.
