Okay, I don't have a tattoo, but I'm seriously thinking about getting one. My biggest dilemma is where to have it put. I'm doing it for me, so I want it somewhere I can see it. However, it's also a personal thing so I don't want to share it with all and sundry all the time. The next dilemma is the pain issue. I've had varying reports of how much it hurts, and it obviously also depends on where it's done! Finally, there's choosing something that is both meaningful and relevant to me, and will continue to be so throughout my life. I already have thoughts about one particular place that I would like to have tattoed, but whether I ever will is not simply a matter of my choosing (!??).

To continue along a similar theme - body piercing. I have pierced ears, but would not wish to have any other part of my body pierced! It's not something I find particularly 'attractive', but that said, my philosophy is 'live and let live'. If someone wants to get tattoed all over or have various areas pierced, that is their choice, and theirs alone. Obviously, a loved one may not be so keen, but what is it they love? Who you are, or what you look like? Some might say that the two are inseparable, but if 'Bob' wants a tattoo and 'Jo' is against it, 'Bob' will still be someone who wants that tattoo, but without the ability to express it. 'Jo' has simply defined what they want 'Bob' to look like, but cannot alter how 'Bob' feels. Tattoos can be condidered yours for life. Can the same be said of a husband/wife/boyfriend/neighbour,etc?

I have 3 tattoos (as I said in the Silliness??? forum) I have one on each thigh. My current work-in-progress is on the front of my left thigh and, as I said, I was practically asleep while it was being done in both sessions that I've had so far. It got a bit painfull when the outline ran towards the top of my inner thigh tho.

The very worst thing is the itching for the few weeks afterwards while it heals!! Arghh! It can drive you mad, because you must not scratch or the whole thing was a waste of time. A friend of mine recommended Lasonil cream, which is a 'Heparinoid-Hyaluronidase Ointment' (so it says) and that helps a lot.

If you live the UK I can heartily recommend my current tattoo artists (a husband & wife team), who are Second Skin of Buckingham, Buckinghamshire. (Shameless plug, but I don't work for them, I am not associated with them, I just get inked by them )

As for what to choose, I found a nice piece of artwork & used it as a wallpaper on my desktop for a couple of months so I saw it everyday & was really sure I liked it. I also asked a few close friend what they thought.

On love & tattoos, well, love is about give & take, yesno? As countless agony aunts have said, you must "communicate". If 'Bob' wants a tattoo that much, 'Jo' should respect him & give him that room to 'express himself'. & vice versa.

I don't have a tattoo myself But my son has two, The first one he had done was a few years ago he used to like the judge dread comic and he thought hard and long before deciding to have the tattoo of JD done.
He really liked it untill they released the film with Sly Stallone after that he hated the tattoo and always kept it covered up.
Then a few months ago I noticed that he lets it be seen again, this must be because in his mind the film has been forgotten now (he hated the film). His choice of tattoo was not wrong though cause it is an exellent tattoo.

I gotta agree with you. As long as he is happy with it again, then no worries.

I have often thought about having one, But I have never had the money spare to have one that I would like. My friend has one on his back that I would love to have but I wouldn't want to copy his. It took two years to complete and cost him £1800.00 that was twelve years ago.

so can tattoos be dangerous if they're on your wrist or finger or such places?
i hear that they would be too close to blood vessels, which ain't good.
is this true?

the most dangerous thing about having one on your wrist/fingers is your next employer - I don't know what kind of job you do but i'd say you'll find it harder to make the right impresssion (not my personal opinion - just a thought) - my recommendation is to put it somewhere where you can show/hide it to suit you current circumstances
