Prof - you do realise that your reason for humour is morally defenceless - someone's worse than you so have a laugh!!!
What about the people worse than you?

people with limbs missing or any ailment still have humour and know how to laugh. My dad didn't have one ounce of humour in his body, he saw fun in nothing whatsoever,I felt sorry for him, he was missing one of the greatest gifts a human could have,to be able to laugh, even at one's self
I reckon that even a Neanderthal man would have laughed/grunted if he saw another slip on some animal shit(no banana's)
no disrespect to anyone

The argument which I oppose vehemently is - some others suffer more than I do, therefore I am morally justified in laughing and having fun. It's a morally repugnant argument. Does someone mentally and/or physically ill and homeless *entitle* me to laugh and have a good time?
There's far too much of this in our society.
btw, nothing to complain about in Prof's latest, as it doesn't invoke some morally offensive principle. I don't expect that the situation of the Prof's dad was what the Prof thinks has justified his own good humour.
Knowing you, Prof, I'm sure that you would reject this argument if you thought it through.[There are other, quite different arguments, though, and much less objectionable ]
I feel very sad for your dad in his last days. Depression in Old Age is far too neglected.

Prof, my argument was never with you but with your argument. Glad you didn't take it personally, you're really and truly one of the best.
There's nothing wrong with adding to the happiness of this god-forsaken world as far as I'm concerned, as long as it doesn't become a moral principle that this is because there are others worse off than yourself.
Regards,

Hello you 2..some interesting points you both make.
My father is battling with terminal illness and has lived 2 years longer than he was expected to live...I think its partly to do with his sense of humour.. he has a black sense of humour...and I share that with him...he has an ability to laugh at himself..his words at times would be shocking to some..eg...my sisters neighbours are of Asian appearance (very nice people)..but recently they were tooing and frooing and someone said I wonder what they are up too...my dad quick as a flash replied..."Making a bomb!"....now that just isnt PC but we fell about laughing...possibly inappropriate in light of the goings on in society...but we laughed..Does that make us bad (and no we are not racist)
The other time that springs to mind is at my grandfathers funeral. He died at the age of 98 (in his soup)..anyway..at the funeral sitting in the back of our chauffeur driven car behind the coffin...my sister said.."What if grandpa suddenly sits up pushes of the lid and says only joking"...we both loved grandpa but couldnt stiffle our laughter, and we were near hysteria in the back of this car...the chauffeur kept glancing us in the mirror...which made us worse.
Life isnt perfect and so it makes sense that we arent faultless too..

My son has also developed an strange sense of humour....
he is very quick and funny and often it is at someones expense...(mine normaly)
eg, He told me when I stood on the scales on a diet...that the reading said..."To be continued!" I laughed it didnt offend me..but some would say it was fattest!

Jab, you are a mate and a half bud! I could not take things personally from friends, because if you are not told anything or ask anything, then you don't learn anything. To keep only one's own point of view is to having blinkers on, to see others points of view aids your own outlookmate.
RT, my respects to your dad, with his illness and his humour.
I often wish I had other forms of humour, like dry humour and your dad's - black, I'm stuck with slapstick.
one of my philosophies is "treat all insults as compliments" that way I get moreplus it don't half bug people when they insult you and you accept it with a smile, they have no answer

Thanks Prof. I regard being one of your mates as a real Distinction.

Priceless Once they've finished climbing up the wall it may make them think! Your humour will do me, Prof, nothing else necessary.
Regards to RT, too, and his dad and son. Like the Scales joke
Life's too short for petty political correctness, especially when confronted with life's realities. PC is so fundamentally unreal. But I suppose if it wards off real racism and bigotry, even some PC must be a Good Thing.
