The advantage of triangular is that you leave yourself less corner crusts to negotiate.

Ah, but lettuce and/or jelly seem to fall out of sandwiches much more easily when a sandwich is cut in triangles than in squares, thereby compromising sandwich integrity. So, from a functional point of view, sandwiches cut in squares are better.
By verdict is, if presentation is important, cut the sandwiches in triangles. Or, if functionality if most important, cut the sandwich in squares. Only leave a sandwich whole if you have to be suspended from a ceiling or some other situation where you would be likely to drop the other half of the sandwich.
