Don't believe your own eyes when you see these deep-fried jobbies racked up on their plastic shelves.
They're actually very tasty and filling when you're staggering about the canels wishing that the floor
would stop rippling.
Cheap, even in the heart of Amsterdam, they'll keep you pleasantly warm and full for hours. I particularly
recommend the chicken and noodle ones...

Check out the pancakes. You can get these with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, etc. Absolutely perfect!
Also you must drink Chocomel - thick, creamy, caramel & chocolate goodness in a can. You can buy it in
most places hot or cold (but I recommend hot, because it sometimes comes with whipped cream and
chocolate sprinkles...mmm). It also masks the taste of mushrooms really well....
Oh, and eat some Indonesian food from one of the many splendid restaurants. And the african food - there's a
good restaurant on Overtoom, I think.
Finally, try the excellent milkshakes from Ben & Jerry's just of the Leidseplein...

FEBOs are okay if you have had a few, as an alternative Smullers Chips (Frites) with mayo are tops, or frikendel special (Frikendel with Curry ketchup, mayo and fresh chopped onion). This is one of the downfalls of the FEBO, you can get the frikendel.. but no special
A good place to witness the Railway cuisine is Utrecht or Amersfoort. You can get almost anything at Utrecht btw... last visited 24 hours ago

Food Options For The Poor

Okay, so the food isn't superb, but what do you want for your guilders? The recommendation to eat these greasy lovelies is aimed solely at the humble traveller, who is likely to be staying in a hostel or one of those hotels with the legendary Amsterdam ladder-stairs (you'll understand this if you've tried to climb one with a heavy rucksack on your back...)
However, I did forget to mention that there is a franchise of FALAFEL shops called Maoz (I think) that do amazing things with chick pea mush. Trust me, it is delicious and only about 6 guilders. Fill up the pitta with as much salad as you can squeeze in, top it all with knobflok (that's delicious garlic mayonnaise). Healthy, tasty and cheap. Try it, but not from one of the dodgy side-street places - you can judge the quality of the falafel by the quality of the salad provided

This researcher wholeheartedly agrees that Maoz Falafel is one of the best vegitarian options for those travelling on a budget, or just conisseurs of this fried chickpea delicacy. Make sure to try out the hot sauces!
I would also reccommend that any traveler make sure to try out a Stroopwafel, which is syrup mashed in between two very thin waffels. I guarentee that the desert will satisfy any sweet-tooth. You can buy them commercially packaged in the automated machines or at the train station or get them fresh at one of the many local markets and bakeries throughout Holland.
If you are poor and travelling throughout Holland I would recommend buying fresh fruit, veggies, bread, cigarettes, shampoo, clothing and about anything else you could possibly ever need at the local markets. These markets usually take place on Saturday and one other day of the week. Check locally to find out exact times.

Our favourite is the Felafal bar formally known as Felafel Dan,
at the start of the Nieuwendijk...
