thanks. feels odd taking guidance from someone younger than i am (by a whopping two years!). i've looked a lot of those links already and i'm basically one of these fast-learning self-taught types anyway, but i could use someone to talk to. smiley - smiley i'm too lazy to learn the smileys so there will have to be a movement back to the original, simplistic and superior ASCII emoticons. i just read on this site that the most well-known claim for first emoticon use belongs to a guy at carnegie mellon (school from which i just graduated). cool, i guess... i see you go to nottingham university. sorry for my ignorance... to me that sounds really cool because nottingham is a place out of robin hood. actually, the main thing i liked about london the one time i visited was that it reminded me of all the victorian children's literature i used to read (c.s. lewis, e. nesbit, lewis caroll...), and they call muffins "american muffins" there. hehe.. i was twelve. i'd love to go back and i really get a kick out of learning british slang as well, plus douglas adams kicks a$$, so i think i'd like to hang around here a bit.

The majority of people I've welcomed are a lot more than two years older. smiley - laugh I can't normally be bothered to write the smilies myself, but I use the Brunel skin most the time, which has shortcuts. smiley - biggrin

I've certainly enjoyed practising archery in Nottingham. smiley - biggrin We have an annual walk around Sherwood Forest dressed up as characters from Robin Hood as well (just one of those silly student traditions smiley - laugh)

American muffins are bigger than hours, hence the distinction smiley - biggrin.

as far as i can tell, american and english muffins are totally different entities. one is sort of like a cupcake and the other is sort of like toast or a bagel... i have no idea how they got the same name.

carnegie mellon was founded by andrew carnegie so we ended up with some kind of "scottish" heritage... "tartan" plaid, scottie dogs, the kiltie band (marching band -- they wear kilts, and in theory the traditional no underwear) and bagpipe players at major events or just to make a huge racket. it's weird. i'd much rather be in a fairy tale. smiley - smiley plus it's one of the world's biggest collections of nerds up there with MIT and Caltech.

i always wanted to learn archery.

what do you think makes people stick around to participate in h2g2?

Yep, the British muffin's like a roll, but they are a bit of a rarity. If you mention muffins, almost everyone would think of the cake kind.

Certainly sounds noisier. I had to wear a kilt as part of my school uniform when I was 11-14. Itchy things.

It's good fun, a great stress reliever too smiley - biggrin

People join for different reasons, and stay around for different resons. You can talk to people from all over the world. There are thousands of edited guide entries to read. There are lots of different forums to discus anything from current affairs to why Thursday should be renamed 'Thing'. It's also the website that Douglas Adams (U42)started, and unsurprisingly most the people here are hitchhiker's fans.
