Hey Darkthrone, or should that be Mr Throne? or just Dark?
Interesting entry. I used to be a fan of death, thrash and heavy metal but they've now faded into the category of something I'd only listen to now and again.
I've always been amazed at the different classifications in music and find it very hard to pin a song down to a specific style, especially when you get into progressive, melodic kinds of subgenres so I wont argue with your labels cos you probably have an ear for these things.
I do have a couple of suggestions and a list of spelling mistakes.
I think the whole entry would look better and be easier to follow if
a)you put it into guideML
b)you have the headings: What isn't Metal + What is Metal
c)you have each genre as a subheading
d)you give the examples directly under each subheading
If you want some help with the guideML have a look at A263026 and you can change the address to h2g2/test263026 to see the guideML code. I'm just starting to use guideML and it's pretty straight forward, just copy it from other pages!
Ok so here are the spelling mistakes. Some of these might just be phrases that sound a bit odd to me, but I think it could just be typing errors. anyway I've given a suggestion each time for how u could change it. Its up to you.
Hope this is of some use to you,
cheers

It's Darkthrone. Mr Throne would just be to much of an ego trip. And I really dont want to be a Mr. this young.
Thanks for pointing out my heaps of grammer and typo errors. I never could spell for beans and even with word processors I'm not much better (ok, so I'm a lazy writer, mainly as I'm a IT person)
I'm more worried about getting the content correct, validated and varified (in a technical sense) before MLing it up (mainly as I really HATE marking stuff up, I much prefer OSI HTML)
But thank you very much for the feedback and advice.
As for various genres, they're actucually really simple to pin down, you just have to have listen to a fair enough and know about the technical side of the music and it's structure. Then the sound just works out like patterns in numbers (basiclly, it's like learning to read Binary and Hexidecimal coding)
But yer, thanks ago for all that, very helpful. Update coming soon.
Darkthrone

Hey, looks like a great start to a great genre. Though, I would add a little bit about the almighty "Dragon Metal" (ie. Dragonforce, Demons and Wizards, Fairyland) and you can't forget "Synth Metal" as a big one. If you decide not to persue these, though, I would understand. There are so many offshoots and variations, it's usually just easier to call everything 'metal' that falls under the simple guidelines of 'metal'. Though that leaves out one of the most interesting aspects of metal, which is the various names and offshoots it's created.
Also, if you can find it, I would recommend a portion dedicated to "The Beginnings of Metal", describing the initial bands and social conditions which spawned them. Just saying that Metal comes from Blues and Jazz and Classical is a little vague There isn't much in America that /doesn't/ come from those genres, dig?
Anyway, those are just a few suggestions. You've taken on quite a subject, and I leave it in your hands. I wouldn't know where to even start.
Good luck,
GN

No such thing as Dragon Metal.
All those bands are PowerMetal, quite clearly. Please take it up with Helloween if you think otherwise.
Synth is another style I have to add to go alongside electronic. Oh, and Symphonic.
I'm not doing a history of Metal, that'a already been done. And hence why I'm not covering the genre formations either, it's not what I'm looking at.

Yes, Dragon Metal is stretching things a tad too far like that stupid Math Metal tag they use for System Of A Downsyndrome...
A very good article, pretty much what my original one should've been. I'm flattered you linked to a bunch of my entries too nice plug of metal-archives.com, they've got a funny idea of what is and isn't Metal (M.S.G. not Metal enough?! Def Leppard and Motley Crue over Tigertailz?!) but it's a great resource.
