Gnomon - time to move on Posted Dec 8, 2003
I think this is a little on the brief side, considering how much more could be said about page turning. You could mention the professional page turner that turns the pages for a concert pianist who is too busy with his or her hands to have one to spare. You could mention the story of Beethoven's page turner, who had to turn the pages of a manuscript containing nothing but scribbles and the occasional hieroglyphics to act as a reminder to Beethoven who played his compositions mainly from memory. You could mention the habit of licking the fingers before turning the page, and even link to the Dilbert cartoon about the page turner.
A little bit of research is needed to merit the title "Researcher".

Equally, I have seen instances (okay, so it was on telly, but there you go) where historians reading from very, very, very old books have turned pages with the assistance of a pair of tweasers, in order to avoid coming into actual contact with the fragile pages.

Equally they may have to wear gloves to protect the pages. I believe that some very old books are having their pages scanned so the books whilst not accessable to the general public in their original form, the public can have access to the content of them and, rather than physically turning pages of books and risk damage, they use the technological equivalent of page turning - clicking on a mouse!

Also people use aids like rubber thumbs, licking their fingers. As Gnomon said, pianists and other musicians have page turners while they are playing. There's lots more to say.
