A Conversation for American Slang

I am a native born US citizen. My ex-spouse is from
Lancashire. When we had been married two weeks he
walked up to me and graciously announced "your awfully
homely arn't you?" He may have begun to realize a
miscommunication when I landed a lovely blow to his
mid-section. In the American vernacular "homely" means an
unattractive (to the point of exceptional plainness) woman. In
the North of Britain (according to the man on the floor) it
means a person who is good at the arts of the home...(he
liked my pot roast).
The US and the UK do NOT speak the same language. Oh,
by the way, we didn't get divorced for 9 years, so don't worry,
you can get over most of the language stuff.

I never thought that homely referred just to women...anyone can be homely.
