There are apparently a number of Murphy's laws, although most of them are probably not attributable to Murphy himself.
I read a story about a housewife who had dropped a piece of toast that fell on the non-buttered side. She went to tell the rabbi (who believed that it was a law of the universe), and, having been convinced that it had actually happened, he declared that the toast must have been buttered on the wrong side.
This particular Law predates Murphy by centuries.

I think you'll find that you could reinstate that quote with no complaints whatsoever. From anyone. Even ESR. Even MIT Press.

I've posted to the Moderation Helpdesk appropriately...
Be impossible for TPTB to keep a list of every single uncopyrighted piece of writing, of course, which is a problem. Hopefully, they'll conclude from this not that some mismoderation is inevitable; but rather that the solution is to not proactively moderate for copyright violations. One can dream...

Yes, you can dream. But one of the deeper aliasses of Murphys law happens to be: Murphy never sleeps. This line of conversation proves it. So expect him at every corner, and he will hit you in between.

ESR mentions that the common miscitation (is that a word? I think I just made it up) of Finagle's law as Murphy's is proof of Murphy's law, as it shows the law working on itself...
