He's been dead for twenty years. The MJ we've been watching on our tellies was actually an animatronic, much as the Queen Mum was for the last twenty years of her life.
The Thatch too is an animatronic. They're saving her 'fake death' for when things get really bad and they think we need a bit of cheering up. The recent hospital stay was a dry run.
