Admittedly, I was there 7 years and have been told that it is much more developed now but the actual place is outstandingly beautiful.
Imagine a bay with about 4Km round the waters edge (at mid tide) Palm trees all around, with a small island just of the northern edge and a lagoon at high tide. I thought that I had arrived in my own personal utopia. If any one wants to check it out, I would advice very early in the season, September to mid October is probably optimal.
Thailand does also have some stunning beaches, regugees from Cha Weng could do much worse than a 1 hour ride to Koh Pha Ngan and head for Thong Noi Pan in the northeast corner of the Island. A large bay divided into two smaller bays (Thong Noi Pan Noi (small) & Thong Noi Pan Yai (Large) though the difference in size hardly noticeable with fabulous sand, not too many hawkers and great snorkeling off the edge. Both of the beaches are cool, but I prefer Yai for cheaper accommodation and good Thai food at proper Thai prices.
