Metal detectors aren't exactly thinking big, are they?
With just a remortgaging of your house, you could afford a fairly high-spec ground penetrating radar unit. Then you could conduct a comprehensive geological survey of the whole parish. In all probability, you'd uncover a few clandestine burials in the process, for which the police are always immensely grateful. That's got to be more fun than a few old coins, hasn't it?

I really don't know why this didn't occur to me before Pinniped. Thinking outside the box (and inside, thanks to the radar of course).
