I find the best thing to do when the spotty fool on the checkout cannot scan an item is to make up a price that is substantially less than the actual price (or the price you would be willing to pay if you are unsure of this), if you add "I think" then if they check you can apologise and if not then you've saved yourself vital pennies and got one up on the supermarket, you'll end up feeling slightly less stressed than other shoppers.
