A wargammer sells his soul

Post 1

Asmodai Dark (The Eternal Builder, servant of Howard, Crom, and Beans)

After nearly 12 years of being a fanatical Games Workshop enthusiast, im tempted to sell my soul to another company.

Why is this? Well it being a a youngling in the ways of the wargame it seems like players actually have a say in how things work. The company, including the cheif rules person, actually interacts with the message boards.

The game? Well ive played games in the past that were a bit difficult. Ive played games with thousands of dice. Yet this is neither. Okay quite a few dice are needed, and theres some book keeping involved, but the game takes about 10 minutes to suss out (yes, 10 minutes to learn an entire wargame - i S**t you not, compared to games workshops 200+ page book). Theres a complex set of rules, but its fine to play with the basics.

Ive joined the teams demo organisers and it seems like the company values its players. They've sent me counters and rules to get playing straight away (which i did, last night). There the sort of company that seems full of energy and vigor. My main hope is that Games Workshop dont catch wind and try and grind them into the dust/buy them out.

See thats the thing

The company i used to wargame with never bought its gamers. You paid for the product at whatever they sold it for. Them being the best in the industry sort of gave them a monopoly

This new company isnt like that. The models are better quality at the moment (due to first companys simplification), and there encouraging people to get into there games by not having massive prices and listening to there gamers. The UK boss of this company has offered to come down and give me a game.

Plus free stuff

GW were never the best at what they did... my uncle David bought his models from Harliquin... and there was little difference when it came to looks...

I actauuly gave up going to GW because of the atmosphere and lack of money... I have a friend who works for them and he gets paid nout... then he would fall to the temptation of buying models at the reduced prices... so he took 2 years to raise what I did in about 2months when I used to work

smiley - laugh They are and its that simple. If they werent then they simply couldnt have the regular price increase.

Find a game with as rich a background as fantasy and/or 40k and prove me wrong. Its as simple as that. Without involving something like a book (e.g. the Robet E Howard conan books, which have been turned into an RPG), theres little that can compete with workshop.

Your not serious? If you look at harlequin models half the range is directly transferable (nice coincidence), the dwarfs are awful (no one can do dwarfs right, even GW, although the Longbeards are an exception), and theres only a few parts of the range that look decent. There about the quality games workshop was at a decade and a half ago. Go have a look at the nightling goblin raiders, and then the old metal night goblins.

Harlequin are alright for a start, but Games Workshop are far better joe im afraid. Ive been wargaming with Workshop stuff for ages, and i wouldnt swap for stuff that looks awful - Harliquin doesnt tempted me in the slightest

GW hasn't really tempted me for years... because of what they stand for... I would rather not use a system like that... which is why me and my friends RPed instead its far more fun and cost a hheck of a lot less money... I got tired years ago of being screwed by big companies like a certain computer operating system...

I liked CCGS too but they cost a fortune... so I buy them when they are cheap and are going out... like in June I bought several hundred for a under £10...

I refuse to go to GW just because they make a system that they change around every few years just so then they can make even more money

They havent actually ever changed the system. 40k yes indeed they have, but everyones given up on 40k. They practically did at 3rd edition just the models kept them there. With fantasy the bulk hasnt been changed in years - just toning down of charecters which has improved the game considerably.

The background hasnt changed since ive been there to be honest. Sell swords are a part of any war, and ogre kingdoms was there years ago (besteray - 5th edition iirc)

Fair play then i say. There models are still great and when they get there heads together it'll go back to being a good company hopefully. Just that now they have big competition.
