Hi there, might I recommend A121096 as a more suitable place on hootoo to call home, at least until you find your feet here?

I'd take a look around and get to know the feel of the place first, you might find some stuff you'd do on 1xtra not available or not allowed on here.

The forum is (used to be!) mainly for fairly impassioned debates (as you'll see from the convo list) so you might want to just have general chats on your personal spaces - bet you weren't even aware that you had a personal space on h2g2 where you can create a profile and store a journal and so forth?

Anyway, welcome and hope you enjoy it here - and don't forget you can contribute to the guide as well if you want!

Yeah this site, never seen it before today so i'll have a scan around and see whats what.

By gum it's a while since we had a good debate. Should have put some dust sheets over the furniture.

It is quite a large site, has been around since '99 and is mainly organised around the guide entries. But there's plenty of conversation stuff too.

is one place to start with links to all sorts of areas.

One of the ace's (assistant community editors) could probably provide an intro set of links here as you've posted it as a central location for others to come to, would help them gain a foothold - any aces about?

You do the same for AskH2g2 and MiscChat.

My advice is to go to misc chat and ask and go to the full conversation list and then click on the link to subscribe to new entries.

That was the breakthrough for me. Finally I realised what the hell it was all about, my personal space came up with current conversations and I was able to start getting around and getting to know people.

Now I have a backlog of old topics as long as several tall people's arms, but all the current stuff is easy to see and I have a great time

Oh, and try to different skins to see which works for you. I prefere alabaster because it works the most logically, for me.

For a taster, why dont you go to my personal space (click on my name) and look through the conversations I've been having. Some are more 'private' than others, so check at the top of the conversation page (once you've clicked on it) to see if it's an 'ask H2G2', misc chat or QI society thread (probably fine to chip into!) or someone's private journal, in which case you might want to introduce yourself more generally before you post.

The 'ask' threads were my real entrance into the H2G2 site. Where I got to know people and find my feet.

The layout isn't, erm, conventional. But you will get your head around it if you like it here and want to hang around.

To change your 'skin' I think it's in the preferences tab. It all depends how you prefer your forums to look Try one or two and see what feels most comfortable.
