I just watched an enthralling documentary about the Windscale nuclear plant, (rebranded as 'Sellafield' by
the Thatcher government in the 80s), accident, that happened 50 years ago. It's only this year that the
tapes of interviews with the workers at Windscale have been released. Anyway the upshot of the accident
which very nearly resulted in nuclear catastrophe, was that the blame was put on the workers in the plant.
McMillan, the Tory PM sexed up the official report by inserting the phrase 'an error of judgement' as a way
of blaming the workers, many of whom had risked their lives in putting out the nuclear fire. It seems that
the real cause was the incredible pressure put on the scientists to develop the plant for producing tritium
so we could show the Americans we had an H bomb, and so share in their nuclear secrets. Safety corners
were cut.
Much of the official report was binned. A convenient 'spin' was put on the whole thing. And of course
there was no rampant tabloid press then, just the usual deference that the media showed to the
establishment.
Hey ho!

Bottler Brown made his biggest mistake at the No 10 press conference. He twice denied that the polls had influenced his decision not to hold an election. When asked directly if he would have gone ahead if the polls had been massively for Labour he said no he still would not have gone to the country.
This,in front of an audience of the most sceptical political journalists. The Son of the Manse has lost it. Watch him start to unravel.

A week is a long time in politics but Ive got a catchy aliterative nick name like Bottler Brown will stick around for a long time yet.
He wont be living that down in a hurry.
However casting my mind back to Major he won an election when everone had him down as a someone unable to win a raffle even if he'd baought all the tickets and rigged it.
Politics is a funny old game and often popularity has little to do with skill in handling the country but how people perceive yyour handling of the country if Thatchers visit to Brown said anything it said "safe pair of hands" Dave is still seen as a bit of posh wannabe eager to embrace the woolly edges of liberal culture and "hug a hoodie".
The British electors know wehre they are with a coniving double dealing spinner they dont know if Dave is the real deal or if he is a Tory wolf in wooly liberal clothing and that worries them and Lady Thatcher.

I think Dave's going to have to keep up the pressure to appease the Hawks in his own party.
I suspect we'll now have a "not got the bottle for a referendum" campaign.
People are amazingly compliant, but there's a lot of students looking at £20K of debt, and there'll be even more when they hold the election, and there'll be a lot of pensioners not nearly as comfortable as they thought they should be.
He should have gone to the country now - he may even have won - but by 2009 he'll be lucky if Labour can hold Scotland, never mind Great Britain.
Key: Complain about this post
