I don't even *try* to play chess. One of those bishops might send me to the Tower and have a pawn hang me.

Bishops currently have a name for avuncular benevolence, but it was different in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when the Inquisition was all the rage.
The saying "put your foot in it" originally referred to burning your food. If your porridge was burnt you would say, "The bishop hath put his foot in it", because bishops were constantly burning people.
I've had no time for bishops since the bishop of London made such an ass of himself (along with Malcolm Muggeridge) rubbishing The Life of Brian on a chat show, without having watched any of it. John Cleese got in some digs in return, but Michael Palin looked disappointed. His parable of the ex-leper would be material for the most proper Sunday school, but the bishop assumed the whole thing must be low farce.

Rewatching the interview it seems they did see the film first, which only makes their comments all the more obtuse.

Parts of it were, other parts were clever debunking, parts were brilliant observation.

The bitterest critics of "Life of Brian" or any other mainstream entertainments, should get a life. If nothing else, they are making the public *more* likely to want to see the works in question. Reverse psychology, or something like that....

It is an interesting fact that George Harrison - a devout Buddhist, known worldwide as a tolerant and peace-loving man - stepped in, mortgaged his property and financed the film, when no one else dared.
This ought to tell the bishop something, but he was evidently sense resistant

There was an early scene that made it plain that Brian was *not* the savior.

Nice! for that, Gnomon. I actually (if only vaguely) remember that one. Danish television used to broadcast the non-news many moons ago. I was devastated when I heard Mel Smith died, only 60 years old
