Why are they called Spelling Bees?

Couldn't tell you to be honest.:-
From discussions it seems to be an exclusively American phrase.
I used it because most people in the world get enough US television to recognise the format of a spelling bee. And the show I was watching had used that exact format, thought it wasn't called a spelling bee as such .

In England, a dialectal form of this word, been or bean, referred to "voluntary help given by neighbors toward the accomplishment of a particular task." (Webster's Third New International Dictionary). Bee may simply be a shortened form of been, but no one is entirely certain.<<<
