Hi, I am also pretty new to the site. I very much hope that you enjoy it. It took a little cultural awakening to figure out that this is not so much a HTTG site as a form of Encyclopedia Personica.

You can find some really interesting stuff here. My only regret is that they are not as interested in DNA type humour, or indeed humour in any but the lightest handed of forms. Humour was always the reason that I enjoyed DNA books so much, and I think the site kind of lets us down in that regard; but, this was DNA's intent. [Maybe he just didn't want to chance competition? smiley - smiley]

I do enjoy some of the lines of conversation out there, and look forward to writing my first entries.

Glad to have more good people in the group. Welcome, welcome.

Hi Ford's vital equipment,

I was brought here 100% by my fondness and respect for DNA. However, I wasn't by any means expecting all fun, frolics and sharply silly humour. My view is that there was a good deal beyond HHGTTG to DNA: his unquenchable fascination with science and technology, the child startled and horrified and entranced by the beings around him, the Beatlemania, the glee, the sorrow. It's all there in his writing (I really hope you've read Salmon of Doubt), and something that runs throughout is an interest in, and welcome to, people (silly / dangerous things that they are). In my brief time here at h2g2 I have seen that this is a community of rather nice, friendly people (and frankly a smarter brand than I've found in other web environments)expressing views and ideas and sharing information that is important to them. We're not here to write a novel, we're here in our free time to maybe fill a gap, reach out a little bit more in new directions, maybe WRITE for the hell of it and have a good time.

So, not all Hitch-hikers Guide, though you do see a light sprinkling throughout if you look hard enough.

I hope you hang around and get comfy here, I think it will be worth it. If you think the place needs smartening up a little with some extra handfulls of meaningful and fiendishly well observed humour, go for it!! Fine humour is always welcomed. smiley - smiley

With my best regards,

WennaKat

I feel that you are precisely right, especially about DNA's extrahumourical activities. I've not only have Salmon of Doubt (and, of course, read it); but even more to the point perhaps was Last Chance to See. Much of his love for science, nature, and (where appropriate) technology came out.

Perhaps the site would have been more appropriately titled DNAGTE or Douglas Noel Adams' Guide to Earth. May have cleared up both the intent and the expected content.

Either way, I do expect to have a great time, and enjoy writing for the helluvit.

My best to you, as well.

Doug (really)
