Traveller in Time on the Useless Serial Bus of the new Modem
"Yes, sure some rain some sun.
Some computer systems repaired for customers.
Broken my head figuring out what Musof did for a certain function. Reconfigured some fieldnetwork parameters in the beta of some program. Done some pogo dancing with the kids when I got home.
Found out the system crash I had last night was not the cause for the local network to fail as it still is kind of sloppy.
Found out 'Waterrat' jumps of the high dive in the swimming pool.
Asked myself, mesologist and finally some heavy books how white blood cells manage to shapeshift, as a result from 'Waterrat' asking us. Still no clue.
How was your day? As boring as mine?"

Saw the subject name and thought this was a DIY question!
Sorry....
Anyway White Blood Cells can shapeshift easily... for years whenever I went for my Cell counts... I have Pseudohypothyroidism.... sometimes the blood test came back with an allevated White Cell Count... after 5 years.. it has now been decided that I am fighting arthritis! I have been telling them that for 12 years!!

"I think so. (but I do not get it actually)
I had some periods of more then an hour the whole Local Network jammed. Mainly because this router was asleep or something? Only this router was completely out of reach (no ping reply). Then it slowly came up again.
This is the same pattern I measured on the office the other day. Ok it took some quiks before the office router completely broke down."

I've just installed a replacement router for my one which was broken when I got back from holiday - so sympathies, TiT !
I had to get my IP provider to help me install it - apparently for a PC it would have been easy - for a .Mac it was more complicated and had to be done manually. Full speed ahead from now on, though.

Traveller in Time hopping on the reset button
"I have bought a new one (basically the same software, same router chip).
I have no idea about the 'plug and play' I think users are supposed to configure via the USB port, only requires drivers to (auto) install from CD.
I do not have USB on the system 'local' to the router. Had to reach it over the network.
Only why can they not just write the default internal IP and account information in the thick manual. It has instructions in six languages how to insert the CD and how to connect the USB but nothing about the router.

Yes, I had to do that too! For some reason the installation wizard didn't work. Probably allergic to .Macs!
The man at the helpline had to guide me. Mind you, that happened when the original one was installed too, except that it took longer the first time!

not its just that you know something that i dont.... if ony becasue i dont find it necessary to know, i love my computer but i couldnt fix it if i tried. but thanks for telling me what a router is. can i ask a question of all you who seem to know so much abuot ocmputers? my cd burner is being fickle. it does one of four things. either it makes a cd but its really really quiet(its done that once since the trouble started), or it will get half way through burning and it tells me theres an error on the cd (i could understand once but 3 consecutive cd's all only just unwrapped, and from different companies?), or it will happily burn the cd but only once on that particular program then it wont work anymore, or it will tell me that the cd is not blank when i know it is because i've only jsut taken the packaging off. so is that a glich with my computer or is it time ot get a new cd burner or what? i wouldnt blame you if you cant answer this... i certainly cant. you just inmpressed me with all your fancy words....
anyone?

Traveller in Time searching for some bugs
"Yes please do me some .
Well perhaps it is a little geeky, but you know I say computer hardware is my job and I have done some study on it. Sorry for the number of strange words. Most times I try to use the full words and just the most common.
I will make an index of some of the entries about broadband.
These DSL boxes have a multi modem (to translate the signal into something computers can handle), a router (say a cyberspace bypass) and a switch (a periferie allowing all physical computers access to the bypass)
CD burners:
--make sure you have enough free space on the Windows disk(partition)
--make sure the system is _NOT_ performing any other disk accessing tasks
--reinstall burner software
"

thanks! that explanation using the cyberspace bypass was very helpful. so just two more questions. 1. how do i check to see if i have enough free space on teh windows disk, and what is it? 2. what exactly are other disk accessing tasks?
*hands traveler some*
thanks for your help

Traveller in Time on his head
"Well I suppose you use MS Windows as you react at the GuideML parser warpings as if they are visible.
Type in 'This Computer' in the address bar of an InternetExplorer browser window, select View/Details 1GB == 1000MB.
An ideal system should have no less then half of each disk free.
Most still work great if 500MB to 1GB free.
Actually any program running on your computer will have some disk access. Just do not allow screen savers, power management, schedulars, virus scanners, browser windows and do not touch the keyboard or mouse.
Basically go do something else . . .
Perhaps your system is capable of some background activity but try to limit this to typing text in a word processor. "
