And I make no apologies for the gross misuse of power evidenced by the plain banner at the moment...

I've only just noticed that Jim, nice one
- what's the point in power if you can't abuse it every now and again. After all, it's not like the plain skin is exactly *official*, now is it?

And why not replacing the Peer review banner in Alabaster the same way? It would be a nice change.

Is the site reacting to the presence or absence of Jim. From pootling along speedily over most of the weekend it suddenly started acting up as if in sympathy within a couple of hours of the labour announcement. Then it spent most of today on dead slow and has been almost completely inaccessible to me all evening until just now when I find Jim is back on. All very mysterious... (except that this evening's problems applied to the BBCi message boards too).

I have no influence over the messageboards but if they are misbehaving, then it might have been a cross-site problem.

Ooh - a lack of a denial over influencing h2g2. It must be true then. Though in politics a denial is taken as even more firm evidence of the truth of something.
I don't know whether the site was cross but the contributors probably were! When I did get to see some pages after the MBs had closed there hadn't been much posting from anyone else either. Did you know they are planning to prevent overnight posting soon? I assume this won't apply to h2g2. It seems a very retrograde step.

That was all way off-topic of course.
So Jim, have you planned the bedroom setup yet, the toys you will get to play with, the college, the career...

They've always 'closed' the MBs overnight due to moderation costs, although they apparently queue the messages. Are they stopping accepting messages at all overnight?
I do know that moderation on the MBs has had problems recently, but I understood they had a solution for this. Maybe it isn't working.
I can't see them applying it to h2g2, not least because it's reactively moderated, so it's cheaper.

Yes, they've previously accepted overnight messages and displayed them later the next day (though some got delayed most of the day rather than just a few hours or went missing altogether). IanG of the science boards says that soon (unspecified time frame) they won't accept overnight posts at all.
