I hope you're not both counting on marriage as a way to become more civilised, though.
I've tried it, and it doesn't work.

Not expecting much in the way of civility on the day.
Mother and both brothers on my side have already threatened not to be there.
One week down, two to go.

I know a father and son who fell out when the son came out. They didn't speak for five years, and they didn't speak as friends for another five. They're father and son again now.
Even if the family turns up a year or two late, you two just make sure it's your day.

Oh, it's not as serious as that. Actually, it's all a bit Carry On. My mother has gone completely mother-of-the-bride. We want a modest, private celebration, my mother wants to invite everyone she ever met and generally make a huge fuss. It's causing a certain ammount of tension but I don't mind since she's paying for us to go to Rome. That's worth quite a bit of nagging and even the odd compromise. The idle threat that she and my older brother would not be able to come was an attempt to make us change the date. They'll be there. The other brother is being homophobic but I don't care if he's there.

Hi Jodes
I'd say Rome is usually known as the City of...well, Rome
Naw, seriously, it's the Eternal City, innit? (There are lots of claimants to the 'City of Love' but it's usually held to be Paris)
Hey guys, sorry I jumped to conclusions about what families might disagree about

Thanks all. Everything is going quite smoothly at the moment. My mother is still being a bit nuts. Her latest insanity is wanting to invite her hairdresser to the registry office. Honestly! I tell her immediate family only and she starts nagging to have her hairdresser there. I don't care if she is friends with her, I don't know the woman. And she thinks I should spend the night at her house and be given away by my father. To which every feminist bone in my body (and I have quite a few) shrieks *I am not my father's property*.
I am so glad I did not give her months to get worked up to it.

How long will you be in Rome? That is one of the places on my must see someday list.
Weddings can be really stressful - even small ones. So try not to let things get to you. You also need to not do so much in advance that you're too tired to enjoy the day. *since you don't have enough people bossing you around already.

friendly bossing I don't mind, especially when it is so sensible. We have nothing planned for the day before but relaxing. Lizardy's mother has been as unstressful as she can to compensate, otherwise my head would have exploded by now. Her only demand, and it was more of a plaintive request, was that she be allowed confetti.
We're only away for five days, which will surely not be enough time, but we will make the most of every second.
