We only ever have it on Boxing Day along with Turkey Hash. (Turkey, tinned tomatos, anything you want to get rid of, herbs ) and it's lovely. A dinner that involves very little chewing for those with bad heads.

I was always told bubble and squeak was so called because the potatoes bubble in the pan when they're cooking, and the cabbage squeaks when you cut into it! Traditionally those are the only ingredients, but all the different additions sound good.

The real beauty of this dish is that any old fool (even me) can be left to prepare it - it's almost impossible to spoil it so long as you keep turning it now and again and dip in to taste if it's ready yet - instant chef!

It must be mentioned that Bubble and Squeak is occassionally found in pubs - most likely as a result of considerable left overs from previous meals
Here is a recipe I received from the publican of one of the many pubs I frequent:
cabbage
potato
swede (Swedish, yellow turnip)
seasoning as you wish
Okay, so it is not so complicated is it? I make it in a crock pot, cooking at 175C (350F) for at least 1 hour (or, until it "bubbles and squeaks," indicating it is done). Actually, here is a good topic for further research, I thought the name was derivative of what your stomach could do after eating too much B&S plus several pints
