Try and stay calm, Clive - only four weeks till X2 comes out, only six or so till Matrix Reloaded.
And surely you'll want a bit of time to savour the DVD of Two Towers before ROTK is the new big thing?
I must confess my eagerness to see The Hulk has been somewhat dented by the iffy trailer shots of the big guy, but I'm still hopeful...

just brought the total film he saw on the shelves in lue of any Empire. still I'm at the train station today, maybe they'll have a copy.
Methinks, despite it all, Magneto rocks.

Catwoman Posted Mar 30, 2003
Magneto does rock. And not just because it's interesting to see him and go 'look how small he is'.
They can't possibly give good awards to the two towers, because RotK is going to be sooo much better (according to Peter jackson, and plus the book is better) and giving two best pictures in a row to sequels can't be allowed.

Swiv (decrepit postgrad) Posted Apr 6, 2003
but why not if they actually are the best films of the year???
I think Two Towers was of the lot nominated - I have to say I wouldn't have been so certain for Fellowship last year
D'you think they'll get any acting awards next year?

Catwoman Posted Apr 9, 2003
If they did get acting awards, it would have to be of the 'supporting actor' variety, unless you want to pick who is leading man/lady. (Frodo, I guess)

Awix Posted Apr 9, 2003
The Academy is a pretentious and political organisation, only by happy coincidence do the best films get the awards they deserve.
LOTR is an ensemble piece, it doesn't really have 'leads' (certainly not on a film-by-film basis - Frodo and Gandalf are arguably the leads of FOTR, but it seems like Aragorn gets more screentime than the two of them put together in T2T). Andy Serkis deserves some kind of nod, though, surely...

Catwoman Posted Apr 10, 2003
I agree, but what exactly could be given to Andy Serkis? He isn't actually seen on screen at all.

Swiv (decrepit postgrad) Posted Apr 10, 2003
...but still he is the actor behind Gollum...
I would expect Elijah Wood to be nominated as best actor next year - Frodo is kind of the "heart" of the trilogy. Then I imagine that definitely Sir Ian McKellan and perhaps Viggo Mortensen for Best Supporting... and perhaps (horribly) a push for Liv Tyler for best supporting actress - they gave it to Judi Dench for Shakespeare in Love after all - though I think Miranda Otto would be more appropriate.

Catwoman Posted Apr 11, 2003
I;m not denying that Andy Serkis deserves recognition, but technically he's not there except in voice (I doubt if they'll accept the work in the black lycra with dots on it).
The difference with Judi Dench is that she deserves Oscars.
(mmm, Viggo Mortensen)

Awix Posted Apr 11, 2003
John Mills (I think it was him) won an Oscar for Ryan's Daughter, for a part where he was totally mute. So giving someone an Oscar for a solely vocal performance is not unreasonable (and this is before we factor in the way the CGI was based on AS's physical performance).
Almost certainly won't happen though. Oscar doesn't like genre movies, and certainly not blockbusters.

Swiv (decrepit postgrad) Posted Apr 11, 2003
can't help but think they know there'll be a riot if they don't at least give it Best Picture/Director/Screenplay awards next year and anyone who hasn't lost faith in Oscar will do then (except perhaps Miramax, but they're "special")
I know they hate fantasy, but they must give ROTK something

yeah, but we can tick over gently can't we? First X-Men 2 (or Y-Men for those who watched Parkinson last night...), then Matrix Reloaded, then a long summer with The Hulk featuring somewhere, then Revolutions and ROTK
