I love reading about stuff like this. It makes sense of the prison scenes in the film Plunkett and Macleane(?)

Investigating the real Macleane to see if he's worthy of an entry is on my list. I haven't seen anything on Plunkett, but the good-looking Captain gets a few mentions.

An interesting commentary that I encountered, by a 17th century writer was that prison was preferable to the Britith Navy, as you would at least be guaranteed better food and better companions.

Who was it that said being at sea was like being in prison, but with the potential for drowning? (or something like that). And although I have absolutley notihg to support this, I beleive that the comment was in refernce to the Royal Navy.
Just a thought.
