I spent December 21st to 24th 1993 in Salford Children's Hospital having my appendix removed, so this pre-Christmas slog has always seemed like a bit of a ballache to me.
Never more so than today. My lovely fiance L kept me up all night last night as she tossed, turned and occasionally vomited with terrible stomach pains. So I went off to work, and sent her to the doctors.
Where she was promptly packed off to Salford grown-up hospital with suspected appendicitis.
Luckily, she's not actually got it. No, instead, she's got a gall bladder infection and possible gall stones. She's hooked up to a drip of antibiotics, high on codeine and watching PPV TV.
And I'm at the flat, with a bottle of Sneck Lifter, cursing December the 
ing 21st. Hoping that I'll be able to bring her home tomorrow and that Christmas won't be ruined.

Hah. I've been living it up all night. Watching Doctor Who (Colin Baker era - she hates that), and I even had the radio on a station I like this morning!

I've been far too upset for that SWL.
Like now, the only way I can get through the pain and loneliness is by eating a full English breakfast.
(In all seriousness, I had a crap night and about two hours kip)

Well, she's had a scan and it's definitely a rather huge gallstone. No idea how or when that's coming out yet.

Pardon my ignorance - do they smash with ultrasound - like kidney stones, or do they open her up and ferret ?

I think that depends on the size of the stone.

There'll be ferreting at some point in the future, because the stone's a whopper.
The doctors might be discharging her today, which would be a relief. Not least because I'm unable to fend for myself. You put her in hospital and 48 hours later I'm sat up till 4am eating soup with a spoon made out of chips*.
*Didn't work. Made a mess.

This is why we need women - to drive forward man's experimental nature - this time it didn't work, but think of the boon it could have been with regard to reducing washing up in future.
