I sign in, and the most posted to thread on my conversations list is a witch hunt?

Every time someone asks "what's the purpose of h2g2", we all come out with the tired cliches about "community". Well this morning I saw the community for what it can be. A group of shrieking harpies in a witch hunt against a man who had the temerity to post the word "chortle".

And I bet I'll be getting dog's abuse for pointing out that thread was immature, spiteful and a damn bad advert for the site.



I'm logging off for today. It's 8:30 and I'm already bloody sick of this place.

Ah, it appears the thread's been removed in time for me to sneakily log on whilst on my break.

For anyone who missed said thread, it involved Effers trying to rustle up some hatred because antigravitas posted in a "private" conversation. The maturity astounds me.

For my part, I asked why a personal dispute was being moved into Ask and was rewarded with being called "sick" and a "prick".

Lovely.

I'm still wound up here, just for the sheer number of people who joined in to take Effers' side! I mean, if I started an "I hate Researcher (X)" thread, I'd be rightly told to grow up. Makes no sense to me.

I'd rather not discuss this one on site, even in private journals- I've got unrelated reasons to stay under the radar- but I totally agree with you. And you're by no means sick, or a pr*ck.

Oh, I found it very early this morning. Scrolled through the first few posts, didn't really get why this was started on 'Ask', wasn't interested in the 'but you did this...' etc, so unsubscribed.
I then went on to read two good entries in PR. I really don't have time to waste.

I wish I could be as professional about things as you are B'el. It'd make life easier for starters...

It's something I had to learn, Psycorp.
I used to get upset by a lot of things (and still am), but as an Ace I shouldn't partake in such flaming conversations - other than trying to mediate - which I knew was impossible the moment I saw the 'contestants'.

What I can't understand, is the way that straight off the bat one of the participants was vilified, despite the fact they'd done what they did off the beaten track. Surely that's not as bad as running to the nearest angry mob?

To be honest, I hadn't a clue what this was all about, I'm not subscribed to any of the threads that were mentioned there, and I just don't seem to lurk enough to know. I couldn't be bothered to try to find out, either.

Fair enoughski. It all seemed like mountains from molehills anyway.

I must say I am less enamoured with hootoo than ever before. I think AGC Ben used to say about how yyou gradually fall out of love with the site.

Shame really 'cause for five years it has been a massive part of my life...

Same here, but it's all beginning to get a bit uncool.

Oh, I could understand some of Effer's feeling about somebody butting into a conversation between her and somebody else, mocking her - I've had that or similar happened, too. What I do in such a case, though, is to unsubscribe from my 'own' conversation if I feel distrurbed enough to not wanting to stay in that convo.
I dcelared my Yikes journal closed on the second day because of somebody disrupting it.
We're up to 46,000+ posts by now.

That's a mature way to handle it B'el. Now why Effers couldn't just do that, I have no idea. Wonder if she'll end up on pre-moderation? Given that she had all that "How do I kill someone" spam the other week, I'd imagine so.

Sorry to drag this up again, but what's really riled me, thinking back, is this comment to someone else (paraphrased) after I'd unsubbed:

"You're [someone else, can't remember who] a hypocrite. At least Psyc's always come across as the type of person he his."

Now this begs two questions that I'd like answering:

1) Have I been carrying out some sort of vendetta against Effers without noticing?
2) What "sort of person" does she think I is that me being a "creep" and a "prick" isn't out of character for me?

Bloody hell, if that's how I come across, I'll piss off now and not come back.

Good grief no - you don't think I'd be talking to you regularly (more or less) if that was the case, would you?
Effers is - Effers.
She must have had one of her (paranoid) moments when she felt as if everybody was out to get her.
She can be really nice, but she can be extremely rude, too. I would not be surprised if she popped over to your PS to apologise once she's off her current trip.

Can't see it myself to be honest, but I'll remain open minded.
