This morning I nailed my doctoral thesis to the University's wall.
Three weeks from now is the public defense.
I'd like to quote from my thesis:
"Abbreviations
...
GFAP glial fibrillary acidic protein
H2G2 hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy
H2O2 hydrogen peroxide
hCG human choriogonadotropin
...
Acknowledgements
My fellow Thingites, Hootooers, DACers and C2Cers for all laughters, innuendos,
wonderful chats and distractions."
So far nobody has noticed H2G2 in the abbreviation list.
The both first nails were bent beyond recognition. The 3rd could withstand my fearless strength and fastened the thesis to the wall. Back at the Uni dept I fullfilled my task and shot a champagne bottle cork into the ceiling, and signed the mark it made.
The youngest hatchlings wondered if we always had and snacks in stead of morning coffee at work, and if they could be hired in that case...

Congrats, DQ! I'll second Teuchter- hope this takes a weight off. Planning anything special to celebrate and treat yourself?

Not really there yet. Still more work that needs to be done before the Big Day aka Public Humuliation Public Defense.
Big auditorium.
Me.
Examinator (prof from other Uni)
Evaluation committee (two profs from my Uni, and one from another)
Anyone from "the public"
Everyone has the right to ask me whatever they want, hopefully within my research area.
Usually this takes 3-5 hours, before the Evaluation Committee, advised by the examinator and hearing the main supervisor, makes their decision.
I'm not looking forward to this. Only to the long vacation afterwards.

So ... one last hurdle ahead of you.
It all sounds rather daunting - but you've been researching and writing this for months so I'm sure you'll acquit yourself admirably.
We'll have the on ice for when it's all over.

Gulp! I agree that it sounds a bit daunting, but I'm sure you'll do great and the evaluation will be excellent. After all the hard work over the years, you've certainly earned it.
Congrats once again! What a huge accomplishment.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
