A Conversation for Talking Point: Rent-Free Tropical Paradise

The English Lake District

I've just returned from a fabulous trip around the world with my family and seen some fantastic places.
But, rather than falling in love with any one of them, we came home and relocated to our favourite place - the Lake District.

Australia was excellent, the people terrific and the scenery unique. But there's nowhere for me to walk, it's too flat.

New Zealand is the answer to that, but if you're not a farmer, or involved in tourism, then I don't know what you would do for a living. A great place to retire to?

I also loved Japan. The people are so nice. I could live there, but I don't know if I could work there. The culture demands that you live to work, and I work to live.

Lived there for three or four years... and it's probably the only place i've found in the world I really miss, although to be honest I'm not sure whether that's because of the people or the place...

Having said that... the owner of the cottage in this picture did once offer to rent it to me .... http://www.leaney.org/walks/photos/20021013u.jpg

Two rooms, no electricity, no road, but one heck of a view... I think I should have taken him up on the offer

Yup, and I could have been living there too... smiley - blue

Must admit, if one day I end up moving back to the UK and the farmer in question is still there I'd be really tempted to see if he'd sell it...

It'd need work on the interior and planning permission to get an electrical supply to the place - in reality it's just a two room stone hut on the edge of the lake - with a 200 yard walk across open fields to get to the road.

Here's another photo, taken from the top of the hill shown in the first photo, but facing in the other direction... you can't really see the cottage, but it's on the lake shore facing among the trees.

Weird,
I went over to Buttermere, Crummock water and Loweswater yesterday, for the first time in years. It's so beautiful over there and I'd forgotten how much. And it doesn't have the tourist traps of the Eastern Lakes.

Oh, and in case your interested... have a glance at A982046... it's a work-in-progress for the time being... but I will get it finished one day smiley - winkeye
