Blow the dust off this old thread.
Here's an interesting missing persons case, that of a hiker on the Appalachian trail who was a fan of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. He brought no phone or ID, no credit cards with him, just a wad of cash and a desire to disconnect. He hiked from upstate New York to Florida then mysteriously died in his tent. Many people noticed him along the trail, several took photos. But no one can identify him. The internet tried and failed. Now a DNA tech company is working to name him. He was only known as "Mostly Harmless".

I started reading it and would like to have got further, but almost immediately a good portion of the screen was obliterated by a popup window urging me to subscribe. Ta-ta, toodle-oo and

I was just pleased it didn't DEMAND a subscription to allow me to read the article. I hate paywalls more than pop-ups.

The BBC is getting to be one of the worst offenders for this. Increasingly, when on the news front page, a blue window appears urging you to open a BBC account (which we all had at one time when this place was a BBC website, don't forget). It gives you two options - yes, or "Maybe later" With some websites simply refreshing the page or finding a link to click on makes it go away, but not this one - it disables everything underneath and comes back immediately after refreshing, so I just close the (incognito) window and re-open it. That does the trick, but it's turning me off the BBC so that eventually I shan't go there any more.

Here's another, less obnoxious website's story about Mostly Harmless.
It doesn't go into any detail about the massive internet crowd sourcing attempt to discover his identity like the Wired article does.

It does link to a three-part podcast though. I may listen to it later.
(Currently I'm listening to a Radiolab podcast from a few weeks ago regarding what might happen if President Big-brain refuses to leave office if he loses the election. (I hate that "if".)
N.B. this was posted on 4 November before final voting results are in.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
