Take look at this image.

That's the size the Earth would need to be compressed to create a black hole. That's the Schwarzchild radius of the Earth.

Here's the Reddit convo: http://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/4i81tw/earths_schwarzschild_radius_the_volume_earth/?sort=confidence

"And would it have been worth it, after all,
After the cups, the marmalade, the tea,
Among the porcelain, among some talk of you and me,
Would it have been worth while,
To have bitten off the matter with a smile,
To have squeezed the universe into a ball
To roll it toward some overwhelming question"?

...somewhere 'round the size of an average speck of dark matter drifting out in the galactic halo region if the primordial black holes model of the MACHO is correct...

...the thermal decay signature of galactic halo region gamma ray bursters is consistent with that, though that's not by itself conclusive...

I'm sorry.

When you posted this last week I read the first two or so paragraphs and my brain shut down.

I came back to this convo to post a link to an unsupported but maybe likely infographic about future space missions.

http://m.imgur.com/lYdRVRi?r

But then I saw the above post again and this time I read the article linked...

Thank you, ITIWBS!

That was a very informative article, written for laymen, to explain the current state of discussion amongst theoretical physicists.

There's no firm conclusion about that particle, but there's also no firm refutation.

I'm actually gladdened that physicists are still trying to reproduce or disprove previous studies/experiments.

The medical sciences are currently at a crisis due to their "publish or perish" model.

Thank you for that link.

I doubt there's a 'fifth force' operating there.

They may have something new in a catetgory with muons and pions, but nucleated on a positronium pseudo-atom rather than an electron gluon or positron gluon.

If so, it doesn't fit the standard model.

Wow!

This happened earlier today in the flooding in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

This man is a hero for rescuing a woman from a sinking car.

He's a legend for what happens next.

This will make you feel good.

I just watched this trailer for a holiday scifi thriller, _Passengers_.

http://youtu.be/7BWWWQzTpNU

In the opening scenes of the trailer I couldn't help but think of _Starship Titanic_.

A interstellar luxury liner, uninhabited except for the protagonists...
The robot bartender gave me a warm nostalgic feeling.

One of the YouTube links that was with the Passengers trailer. The original starred Robert de Niro and... pretty much everyone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Tycoon_(1976_film)

Ah, so it was. The links after a video on YouTube can vary greatly based on previously viewed videos as well as the current video.

I now see the Last Tycoon: an Inside Look video as well as some other trailers and features regarding other films and TV shows. But I also see one for John Oliver's This Week Tonight and one for The Hydraulic Press Channel (crushing a PS3). Those don't surprise me as I often watch those. What does surprise me is a B&W 1950s educational video titled "How To Undress In Front of Your Husband". smiley - huh

http://youtu.be/OvqvHu-9kLE

Since this "educational" video espouses the risks women face from this new menace, the "candid photographer", I wonder if I was targeted for all the photography videos I've viewed. It then proceeds to compare and contrast the disrobing methods of "the famous Hollywood personality, Elaine Barrie Barrymore", and "...in the flat below another Hollywood celebrity, Mrs. Trixie Friganza."

Trixie Friganza. That's a name and a half smiley - bigeyes

I only visit YouTube in an incognito window, so the links I get are generic. They have no cookie to base any recommendations on smiley - evilgrin

Well, I'm sacrificing anonymity and privacy for better selections. I have found some good photography tutorials from the recommendations.

Plus, how else would I have learned to undress for my husband in the '50s?

And I think I just heard that tonight's Fresh Air is an interview with the man who's just directed a remake of The Magnificent Seven smiley - facepalm

I'm not against all remakes in a dogmatic fashion, btw. True Grit was very good, and the Donald Sutherland remake of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers outshines the original. Also, with the advances in effects over the past few decades, I wouldn't mind seeing a few old sci-fi films updated.

I haven't even seen most of these. Astronaut crew portraits were stodgy and stiff for many years, until some more artistic folks came to work with the Public Affairs Office in our graphics department. The current #1 spot is for ISS mission 42! smiley - towel I'd like to think I had a very small part to play in this poster's creation as my coworker in graphics asked me if I knew how to get a hold of anyone involved with the HHGttG film. Well, I sort of did. After conferring with Pastey and others, I sent a message to U5. NASA wanted to get permission (or at least confirmation) before making a themed portrait.
