I think the Hubble should be kept.
The US is pulling the plug rather than giving it the needed major overhaul.
The senate has decided to review the rather decision of it's fate by an independant scientific committee.
It has sent views and information from a distance we never thought possible.
Mars can be put off untill the Hubble dies because;
The Universe is 14 Billion years old, we know because of Hubble.
The expansion of the Universe is speeding up.
We know because of the Hubble Telescope.
Dark energy is thought to be 70% of the universe(called anti-gravity)
We did not think it existed before the Hubble Telescope.
More can be gained!

Right, its definitely a useful tool for interplanetary research!

How are you doing jaZZ?
I do love the pictures from the Hubble.

Great pictures! I think that is a good enough reason to keep hubble going, these pictures inspire.

Dear abbi,
As usualI agree with you!!
there has been nothing that I have seen in the local media about the plug being pulled on Hubble. But then there has been that ghastly bombing in Madrid.
What can we do to save Hubble I wonder?

I believe the issue has been floating around for a while. And I think too that the Hubble should be kept. I heard that using cunning mirror techniques you can get better magnification from Earth, but the Hubble is a significant scientific enterprise in its own right.
Unless of course the Hubble is being replaced by something better.

The Hubble needs a tunneup and that takes a shuttle ride and more money. It has been a battle since Bush has been in office and they have learned even more from it since he has been in office
The Hubble will last another 6 years if they do the maintenance.
The cost is considered prohibitive and some say the mission is too dangerous. They do not have a lot of faith in the shuttle if they are thinking danger is the reason.
The things they have learned have turned science upside down, why stop?
The cost is prohibitive because of the Mission to Mars Bush is pushing forward. There is not enough money to do both. The Hubble has and will tell us about the Universe, it's working! The cost of the Hubble is pennies in comparison to the new Mars plan not to mention we are there now.
We can write letters to US and Nasa or to the head science people of your own countries. Many have, that is why there IS an independant board of scientist doing a report on value, cost and safety to try and save it.
I have a feeling Bush has made up his mind thoughand we know what that means.

I was hoping private industry would buy it.
I am sure they have a lot to do with the Mars Mission.
Most of what is floating around up there is privately owned or junk.
