abbi normal "Putting on the Ritz" with Dr Frankenstein

"In a ruthless display of power politics, Republicans created unassailable majorities in five of Colorado's seven congressional districts. The shameless act was introduced with no public notice and railroaded through in the last three days of the session to ensure that the public would not have time to protest its disenfranchisement."
The Denver Post ~ may 2003
The redistricting was in favor of the Republicans, all changes awarded them the majority.

Colorado is one of 4 states (that I know of)that had this fight going. Texas made the news by having the legislators skip town. Colorado did this while ignoring the more important social issues at hand and the desperate state budget problems. Our state supreme court may get in on it now. The US supreme court says the state courts should settle them. There is only the slightest possibility the US will end up ruling on the redistricting. New York and Georgia also have similar fights happening. If anyone knows how they have gone I'd be interested to know.

In Georgia, the attorney general and the governor are suing eachother to figure out who has the authority bring a case in federal court about gerrymandering. It's gone to the Georiga Court of Appeals, and the attorney general won. Now it's headed to the Georgia Supreme Court.

The white republican governor is trying to order the black democract attorney general to drop an appeal about our congressional districts.

I'm agaisnt gerrymandering. I'm in a gerrymandered district desgined to get blacks elected. It looks like someone squashed a large spider on a map of Georgia.

I would prefer a system where districts had were made up of entire political subdivsions. In Georgia, districts would be groups of counties.

I would prefer abandonding georgiraphic representation even more. Let us vote in blocks in the state. Give each political party a number of representatives that conincides with how many voters they can get to vote for them. Then they can vote within the party for representaives.

Sounds like the right idea to me :blocks were each political party has a number of representatives. It sounds closer to the *ideals of democracy* alsosmiley - smiley

How could that be changed? Would it be the US Supreme court changing it through out the country?

As I understand it, it wouldn't take much. The way each state apportions it's representaitves is up to the individual states. A state legislature would just have to pass a law.

It was kicked around a little bit in Georgia a couple of years ago, but no one took it seriously.

RAF Wing... Lookee I'm Invisible!!

It's all a political fiction anyways. Why don't they just save some time and effort by declaring George W. Bush Augustus Presidente for Life and be done with it. Nobody's going to object anyways.

Why jump through all the hoops when there's no significant difference between the parties? Is suspension of disbelief really THAT important?
