h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

People in Africa have long known how to make a little go a long way. They do not have the bags from Bush dropped from the sky they have to rely on their own local versions. As there are no jobs to be had these folk have to live off the land. The women make the beer generally and the kids make intricate vehicles from wire as their toys. The men drink the beer and discuss what they heard on the BBC World service (only kidding!). Houses though are quite cheap if you don't go for the iron roof and metal window frames. No public transport cept for the odd ox cart so you get to do a bit of walking!
This does away with visits to the health club. Excitement? Well a visit from the local dictator usually arouses some interest if only to see your reflection in the shiny Mercedes car he came in! No need for banks as the money you have is "on the hoof" as it were and the interest can be quite good (depending on the bull) like 100 per cent per annum. Schooling though can be expensive as it is necessary to be a "party member" to get in. No fuel bills the sun does the drying and a bit of local tree helps to cook the Sudsa (assuming you have some)! You will definately get financial help if oil is found and representatives from the Bush government and oil companies will be around literally "like a shot".

Otherwise you could live in the UK below the age of 25 without a job and try to live on around 5 pounds a week. I know someone who did and is a true testament to the Blair aka Thatcher government. He lived on pasta and canned tomatoes.

Now from this I glean that it is very possible to live extremely cheaply but you don't have many friends or interests. However you do get to remain alive! For what I do not know!
