Hello,

The h2g2 adventure game on radio 4 keeps restarting, (even when I didn't die or lose), after about ten or twenty moves. I am using a dial up internet connection. Any ideas what is causing this, or how I can fix it?

I will greatly appreciate your response.

Hi basquetbol,

That must be really infuriating!

I have checked the R4 messageboard linked to the game and din't see anyone else reporting a problem but that doesn't mean much as it is a game play help board really.

I will go and see if I can find someone to help you as I haven't a clue sorry! smiley - ok

Hi there basquetbol,

As I'm not even a guru, I appologise if my explanations are a bit general. However, the first thing the gurus will probably ask is to confirm that you are you using Internet Explorer on Windows (if you know the versions of these and of Flash Player, these may also help).

There are 4 things which I can think of which may cause this kind of thing to happen,
* if you click on the refresh button or reload the page
* disconnecting from the internet (it may get stuck on "contacting sub-etha net" if you're disconnected). Your game may be lost even if you re-connect to the internet, as your connection (IP address) will change
* I think it uses cookies to identify you and your computer. If you're blocking them, it won't know who you are.
* Something's gone wrong at the BBC end of things

If you think it's one of them, then let us know, if not tell us exactly what happens, including any error messages you get.

Yours,
Bob McBob

Hi Bob McBob,

I am using MSN Explorer 9 dial up. I also have Macromedia Flash Player 7 (version 7,0,19,0) on my computer. I am not blocking cookies. I believe that the problem is with the BBC site. Randomly, when I type a command while playing HHGTTG on Radio 4, what I have typed appears on the game board, but there is no response to my command displayed. Then, no matter what I type, the game restarts after I press enter.

smiley - sadface Hmmm, now that is wierd.

To be honest, I don't really know how that sort of thing could happen, but I can't think how it could be your PC causing it. If it's a problem with the BBC's stuff, then I'm afraid I can't really be much help, but a Guru might be able to help you (they'll hopefully post here when they've an idea on what might be wrong), or you could try the BBC Radio 4 site staff directly by clicking the "Contact Us" link at the bottom-right of the game page.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help,
smiley - goodluck Yours,

Hi Bob McBob, Mort,

Something that may be of interest... When I played HHGTTG on radio 4 at 6 pm London time Tuesday night I didn't experience the restarting problem. But when I tried to play at 11 pm London time, the game was restarting very frequently. Could it be that the problem is occurring because the Radio 4 site is getting overloaded with online players?

I wrote an e-mail to radio 4 on Saturday the 5th about the problem and posted a complaint to the BBC on Sunday the 6th.

Regards,
basquetbol

That's a good point actually, you could try it with Internet Explorer (if you have it) or FireFox (you can download FireFox free from http://www.getfirefox.com - it's about 5MB).
