Cottaging is hanging about (usually in public loos) and picking up a bloke for sex.
Before being gay was legal and gay pubs were invented, it was a bit hard to pull, so blokes hung about loos on the off chance. Although these days it specifically referrs to 'wham bam, thank you man'.
